The Apparitionists: A Tale of Phantoms, Fraud, Photography, and the Man Who Captured Lincoln's Ghost by Peter Mansea
In the early days of photography in the wake of the Civil War, “spirit photographer,” William Mumler took portrait photographs that featured the ghostly presence of a lost loved one alongside the living subject. Mumler was a sensation, although still eventually accused of fraud (P. T. Barnum served as the prosecution). To this day, no one has been able to solve the mystery of Mumler’s spirit photography. This "rare work of historical nonfiction” -- Publishers Weekly, was one of the magazine’s Top Ten Books of 2017, as well as an NPR Best Book of 2017.
