Hardwood Stem Cuttings

Hardwood Stem Cuttings

Learn to propagate hardwoods! Cornell Cooperative Extension of Monroe County's Master Gardener, John Colagrosso describes one of the ways to propagate woody plants (trees and shrubs). Comparisons are made to other ways, such as softwood and semi-hardwood stem cutting, and stem cuttings of non-woody plants (herbaceous). December is a good time of the year to take hardwood stem cuttings. Registration is recommended.

Master Gardener, John Colagrosso has been with Cornell Cooperative Extension Monroe County since 2010. He is former Co-President of the Henrietta Garden Club and former leader of gardening volunteers at Tinker Nature Park in Henrietta. John spends most of his current volunteer time at the Tinker greenhouse where he plans and conducts gardening workshops. He's been doing stem cutting propagation for at least 20 years.
