The Three Erie Canals: History and Folklore In-Person
New York’s canal went through three eras: the original Clinton’s Ditch, which was completed in 1825, the enlarged canal completed in 1862 and today’s barge canal system which was completed in 1918.
Bruce Schwendy, a member of the board of directors of the Canal Society of New York State, will discuss the folklore of the Erie Canal and some common misconceptions. He will also demonstrate some actual canal horns and tell how canal horns were used for signaling on the early canals.
