SUFFRAGE AS A WAR MEASURE In-Person
Dr. Preston Pierce of the Ontario County Historical Society will discuss the special 1917 military census and “inventory” taken by the state of New York prior to the American declaration of war. This military census and inventory resulted in 5.4 million New Yorkers, men and women, being surveyed and “registered.” A significant aspect of the census was that women played a major roll in taking the census and a concrete example of what the suffragists called “suffrage as a war measure.” This explained why they asked for voter approval of a NYS suffrage amendment in November 1917.
