Jeffrey Q. McCune, Jr. - Disobedience: A Politics for Radical Queer Life

In this talk, Jeffrey McCune offers disobedience as an active and ideal politics for queer life. A performance of disobedience is an intentional refusal of the traditional narratives of queer life, an invitation to lean into ways of knowing which privilege the marginal voices on which so much of LGBTIA+ storytelling relies. This politics rejects notions of “belonging” and “community” to highlight how LGBTIA+ commitments to such terms pushes us into state discourses and white supremacist canons of thought. Professor McCune will invite us into a “reading practice” which enables a richer telling of queer life and history, producing a more complex and rigorous imagining for queer futures.

McCune is director of the Frederick Douglass Institute of African & African-American Studies and Frederick Douglass Associate Professor of African American Literature and Culture in the Department of English at the University of Rochester.
