Non-Fiction Book Club In-Person
Join us for Grandma Gatewood's Walk: The Inspiring Story of the Woman Who Saved the Appalachian Trail by Ben Montgomery. This National Outdoor Book Award-winner is the story of Emma Gatewood who left her small Ohio hometown in 1955, at the age of 67, with just a change of clothes and less than two hundred dollars. The next time anybody heard from her, this genteel great-grandmother had walked 800 miles along the 2,050-mile Appalachian Trail. At age seventy-one, she hiked the 2,000-mile Oregon Trail. Gatewood became a hiking celebrity and appeared on TV and very likely saved the AT from extinction. We will meet for discussion and dessert on Thursday, May 11th from 7:00-8:00 PM in the library. Advance registration is necessary. Copies are available at the circulation desk.
