Rights and Recognition: The Haudenosaunee in the New Nation In-Person

JOIN US for a reading and discussion series centered around historian Michael Leroy Oberg’s insightful book, Peacemakers: The Iroquois, the United States, and the Treaty of Canandaigua,1794.
Signed on November 11, 1794, the Treaty of Canandaigua is one of the oldest active treaties between the United States and sovereign Indian nations. It marked a significant agreement between the leaders of the Six Nations of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy and representatives of the United States, aiming to forge peace in Western New York in the aftermath of the Revolutionary War. Oberg’s Peacemakers explores the intricate cultural diplomacy that shaped this treaty. A vivid storyteller, Oberg brings to life the complexities of this historic event which occurred right in our own back yard.
This program is perfect for history enthusiasts, students, educators, and anyone looking to gain a deeper understanding of the enduring legacy of early American–Native American relations.
REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED for this FREE program series. Registration is open through August 30, 2023.
We will meet Wednesdays, 6-7:30 pm, in the Kusler-Cox Auditorium, 3rd floor, Rundel Memorial Building.

Books will be provided. Participants should plan to attend all five meetings and participate in the discussion.
