Unlocking Second Chances #CleanSlateNY

Unlocking Second Chances #CleanSlateNY In-Person

Join us on November 18 from 11am-2pm in the Kate Gleason Auditorium at the Central Library of Rochester & Monroe County (115 South Avenue, Rochester, NY 14604) to learn from policy experts, lawmakers, community leaders, and reentry advocates about the impact of this newly enacted sealing law, reentry services and resources available in the community.

Register here in advance (or scan the QR code on the attached flyer) to have your criminal record reviewed at the event by legal professionals so that you can accurately understand your eligibility for sealing and/or other forms of legal relief.

The Clean Slate Act (CPL 160.57) is an upcoming New York State criminal record sealing law that will (with a few exceptions) automatically seal misdemeanors three years after conviction, and felonies eight years after conviction or sentence. The Clean Slate Act passed the legislature in June 2023 and was signed into law on November 16, 2023. This Thanksgiving season marks one full calendar year the legislation waited to go into effect on November 16, 2024.

2.3 million New Yorkers have an old conviction record and struggle to gain access to jobs, housing and education years and even decades after successfully completing their sentences. Recently enacted Clean Slate legislation will provide new opportunities to allow New Yorkers to get back on their feet and support their families.

The Clean Slate New York coalition, in collaboration with the Center for Community Alternatives (CCA), Community Service Society (CSS), Legal Services of CNY, Legal Assistance of WNY and other local partners are organizing Clean Slate Public Education Events and Clinics to discuss the powerful impact of the Clean Slate Act across Western and Central New York. It will feature discussions with lawmakers, formerly incarcerated individuals, and community leaders about the significant benefits of the Clean Slate Act.
