Meet the Orchestra Series: Flute In-Person

Meet the orchestra series: performance and historical background on various instruments. Each program will feature live music in various styles with an informed background. The program will be taking place in the Kate Gleason Auditorium in the Bausch and Lomb Building.

Born in Kenosha, Wisconsin, Marjorie Roth has lived in Rochester since 1983.  She holds a DMA in Flute Performance and a PhD in Musicology, both from the Eastman School of music. She teaches Studio Flute, Music History, Music and Magic, Music and Gender, and a study abroad course in Austrian Music and Culture at Nazareth University. Marjorie plays bass flute in the Rochester Flute Association's flute choir, serves as coordinator of the RFA's annual Flute Fair, and sponsors the organization's international flute choir composition competition.

Alexandra Hine based in Rochester, NY earned a BM from Nazareth University and MM from SUNY Fredonia, both in flute performance.  In addition to being a flutist, she is also a pianist and organist.  She has a private studio of flute and piano students, is the music director at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, and has the honor of playing principal flute with the Finger Lakes Symphony Orchestra and Center Stage Pops.  In addition to being a musician, Alex is also a newly certified group fitness instructor at the YMCA of Rochester and enjoys combining her passion for music and fitness in her new role! Alex lives in Pittsford with her husband, 1 year old baby boy, and her two step children.

 

Annette Farrington teaches flute at Nazareth University where she performs with the Wilmot Wind Quintet. Annette received degrees in music from Arkansas State University and Florida State University but for the past 27 years is proud to call Rochester home. She is principal flute of the Penfield Symphony Orchestra and performs with a variety of other community ensembles. In 2024, she formed the Gold and Ivory Duo with her good friend and colleague Alexandra Hine to perform unique combinations of flute and piano, two flutes, and four hand piano duets. Annette also plays flute regularly at Asbury First United Methodist and sings in the choir. A long-time supporter of the Rochester Flute Association, Annette has served on the board in various capacities, including as past President. She directs the RFA Flute Choir and served as a teacher and coordinator for the RFA/Hochstein Flute Camp. In 2025, she celebrates a 50-year anniversary of flute playing.
