LGBTQIA+ Archival Film Series In-Person

Join us for a screening of Shoulders to Stand On! This full-length documentary film, captures the stories, struggles and achievements of gay pioneers; highlights many events that put Rochester, NY in the local and national spotlight for social justice issues; and celebrates the spirit of a community that is bound together with a steadfast sense of pride. It includes personal and historical stories of courage, sacrifice and accomplishments of the LGBTQ+ community.

September 17: The Watermelon Woman

A 1996 romantic comedy-drama film by Cheryl Dunye. Cheryl, a young Black lesbian working a day job in a video store while trying to make a film about Fae Richards, a Black actress from the 1930s known for playing the stereotypical "mammy" roles relegated to Black actresses during the period.

November 19: Mädchen in Uniform

In a strict Prussian boarding school for girls, sensitive student Manuela Von Meinhardis develops a forbidden love for one of her teachers, the compassionate Elisabeth von Bernburg.
