A Joyful Celebration: The Erie Canal at 200

A Joyful Celebration: The Erie Canal at 200 In-Person

October 2025 is the 200-year anniversary of the opening of the Erie Canal!

In 1825, to quote Jesse Hawley, “the men of New York built the longest canal in the world, in the least time, with the least experience, for the least money, and to the greatest public benefit.” Two hundred years later we are still celebrating this greatest public works project of the nineteenth century. Brighton Town Historian Mary Jo Lanphear will share the influences of the canal over the centuries.
