Irondequoit Historical Society Lecture Series- Selma Hospital and Civil Rights with Sr. Barbara Lum

Irondequoit Historical Society Lecture Series- Selma Hospital and Civil Rights with Sr. Barbara Lum In-Person

Join the Irondequoit Historical Society as we welcome Sister Barbara Lum. Sister Barbara is actively involved in a drop-in ministry program, serving neighbors that may be homeless, or suffering from mental illness and/or addiction.

During her presentation, Sister Barbara will talk about her service in Selma, Alabama, from 1958-1968. She was involved in helping to run the only hospital that would treat Black people from several surrounding counties. The Good Samaritan Sisters and staff also cared for those that were beaten by state troopers and sheriff’s deputies interrupting the march for voting rights on Bloody Sunday, March 7, 1965. The Sisters also ran a school for practical nursing and an elementary school for grades one through eight. Organizations in the North sent books and medicines to help make all of this possible.

The Irondequoit Public Library is committed to creating inclusive and accessible events. To request a reasonable accommodation or discuss your needs, please contact one of our Inclusion Coordinators or call the library at 585-336-6060.
