Water Safety for Paddlers In-Person

Tips for safer, happier paddling. Water Safety for Paddlers -

Come in out of the cold and let's talk about paddlesports! While no formal training is required for human powered craft in NYS, a little bit of knowledge can make your experience safer, more comfortable and more fun.

This 2 hour safety seminar, suitable for all ages, will get new paddlers ready for the water, and will increase knowledge for long time paddlesports enthusiasts. We will use real equipment to illustrate concepts. Topics include boat types, required equipment, paddling basics for comfort and safety, rules of the road, trip planning and emergencies. We will also cover NYS canal specific hazards and procedures such as locks and dams.

Your instructors, Captains John Johnston and L J Fisher, have extensive experience teaching and operating on the canal system, including experience as tour boat captains with USCG compliance and training, 100 Ton USCG Captains Licenses, NY Public Vessel licenses, Certified NYS Boater Safety Instructors, and National Safe Boating Council On-the-Water Safety instructors. Captain LJ is also a certified NYS Guide and American Canoe Association certified kayak instructor.
