Rochester's Broad Street Bridge & Subway: Past, Present, & Future

Rochester's Broad Street Bridge & Subway: Past, Present, & Future In-Person

Michael Brown will discuss the past, present, and future of Rochester's Broad Street Bridge and Subway system.

Perhaps no single structure carries as much of Rochester’s history as the Broad Street Bridge. Built as an aqueduct to take the Erie Canal over the Genesee River, the span became part of the Rochester Subway system, with a road deck added above what became the train tunnel. In the years after the subway ceased operations, the old railbed beneath Broad Street became a shelter for many, a canvas for some, and a literal and figurative underground in the heart of downtown. Today, the "ROC the Riverway" initiative is planning to reshape the old structure, creating a new era in its history. From aqueduct to subway to graffiti gallery and beyond, the Broad Street Bridge continues to reflect a changing Rochester—over 184 years and counting.
