"Broken Country," by Clare Leslie Hall, is a dual-timeline novel set in a rural English village, exploring themes of love, loss, and regret. The story centers on Beth, who is happily married to Frank, but their relationship is built on a buried past. The arrival of Gabriel Wolfe, Beth's teenage love, and his son Leo, forces Beth to confront her past and make difficult choices. The novel intertwines the past, where Beth and Gabriel's passionate romance blossomed, with the present, where a murder trial and the tragic death of Beth and Frank's son, Bobby, cast a long shadow.
