Corsets & Crowns: The Roots of Drag in Nineteenth-Century America In-Person

This talk explores drag as a long-standing form of gender performance rooted in American theatrical traditions. It also examines how early forms of popular entertainment, including minstrel shows—an explicitly racist tradition—contributed to stage conventions of exaggerated identity and helped shape the broader history of female impersonation in the United States. We will explore Rochester’s drag history within this wider national story, highlighting drag as both an artistic practice and a reflection of evolving cultural ideas about gender, identity, and performance. Presented by Brandon W. Brooks, local historian, Director of Programs for the Landmark Society, and former curator at Genesee Country Village & Museum. Registration recommended.
