Join us for a performance by musician Ryan Johnson in the Dorris Carlson Reading Garden (rain location Kate Gleason auditorium)!

Ryan Johnson is a musician, composer, producer, nationally endorsed artist, and music educator based in Rochester, NY. A prolific creative force, he has composed and released more than eight full-length albums of original music, earning recognition for his distinctive voice in Fusion Jazz, Funk, and Neo-Soul. His work blends rich harmony, expressive guitar work, and cinematic composition, resonating with audiences around the world.

Throughout his career, Ryan has performed alongside and opened for acclaimed artists including Cabo Frio, Sharon Jones, Tower of Power, Jennifer Holliday, and Charlie Hunter. These collaborations reflect both his versatility and his standing within the national music community. Ryan holds national endorsements with D'Angelico Guitars, Godin Guitars, and Dunlop accessories. He has achieved widespread regional recognition as a performer and educator, appearing on prominent stages including the Rochester Lilac Festival, Rochester Fringe Festival, Blue Cross Arena, Highland Bowl, Webster Jazz Festival, Buffalo Music Festival, and the Rochester International Jazz Festival.

Beyond the stage, Ryan is deeply committed to music education and scholarship. His doctoral research focuses on innovative pedagogical approaches to collegiate music theory, harmonic analysis, and inclusive teaching practices; bridging performance and academia in meaningful, forward-thinking ways. Ryan’s original music can be heard with his group Escape Terrain and on recordings with national artists such as Cabo Frio and Reliably Bad.
