Fossils—whether they are invertebrate specimens found in New York or massive dinosaur bones discovered in the American West—hold tremendous scientific value, but only when they are properly collected and documented. Without this critical information, a fossil becomes little more than a curiosity.

While locating fossils requires knowledge and skill, the real work begins after they are found. Proper fossil collecting involves careful excavation, preservation, and detailed documentation of the specimen’s physical location and surrounding rock layers, along with assigning a field label.

Once back from the field, the process continues with cleaning, permanent labeling, entry into a cataloging system, and secure long-term storage.

This talk will provide an overview of each step, helping collectors ensure that fossils retain their scientific importance and can be studied and appreciated by future generations.
