Fireside Science Chat with Professor Mark In-Person
Adults, join us on the last Wednesday of each month (September and November it'll be the 3rd Wednesday) - May, except Dec.), 6:30-7:30PM for an informal reading club at the Mendon Public Library on science topics from current and historical popular news. One or two topics are selected each month. Links are provided to one or two publicly-available articles for each topic. Participants are asked to read at least one of the articles before the session. Discussion will be free-flowing and open to all points of view. Mark will facilitate the discussion and attempt to clarify any scientific points that come up, but he will not promote any particular viewpoint other than keeping a focus on fact-based, analytical, and skeptical discussion. All should come with an open mind and an expectation to expand their horizons. Mark will have topics ready to go each month, but the goal is for participants to suggest and decide topics for upcoming sessions. Advance registration for each session is required and the group size is limited to 10 participants to facilitate inclusive discussion. Participants can sign up for each session individually (no commitment to attend multiple sessions).
About the Facilitator: Mark Fairchild is a long-time Honeoye Falls resident and Distinguished Professor Emeritus at RIT after four decades on the faculty. With a focus on Color Science, he has been active in multidisciplinary science spanning areas such as human perception, neuroscience, optics, imaging, and enology. His most-recent general-audience book, Munsell Trees: A Season of Leaves and Colors includes unique photography of local trees progressing through the seasons.
