Leo Lyons wasn’t just an early football owner—he helped shape the game itself. As the driving force behind the Rochester Jeffersons and a founding figure in the NFL’s creation in 1920, Lyons pushed the sport forward at a time when professional football was still finding its footing. He championed innovations like team logos, supported the shift to a more aerodynamic ball, and spoke out in favor of integration—years before it became policy—placing him at the center of the league’s formative years.
With football season underway, it’s the perfect moment to revisit this remarkable legacy—told through the personal lens of Lyons’ great-grandson, John Steffenhagen and award-winning author and historian Jeffrey J. Miller.
