Please join us for “The Ancient Oracles Revived: Spiritualism and Women’s Rights in 19th-Century Upstate New York” with Marjorie Roth, PhD, DMA, Professor of Music History and Studio Flute at the School of Music, Nazareth University.
In Upstate New York we are aware and proud of Seneca Falls and the role that city played in the beginning of the Women's Rights movement. What we are often less aware of are the many links between early feminism and the advent of another new phenomenon, born in the same year and the same Upstate region: the Spiritualist religion. In this talk we will explore the beginnings and the details of both Spiritualism and Feminism. We will note the ways in which these two seemingly unrelated topics intersect intellectually and geographically, and how they can trace their roots to the once powerful and famous Sibyls (prophetesses) of the ancient world. This presentation will appeal to people interested in women's history, Upstate NY history, and religious history.
