Death Becomes Her - Periods of Mourning in the 19th Century In-Person
Join us for an interesting discussion of "American deathways," the cultural customs around dying, death, and mourning in the United States. Today when someone passes away, we generally wear black for the funeral only. But how did 19th-century Americans react when someone died? Did women really wear black all day, every day for years? Was black clothing truly poisonous? Why was it always the color black? Were people really buried alive? All these questions and more will be explored by local Fashion and Public Historian Brandon W. Brooks.
