Opera Guild: E Pluribus Unum: Opera Ensembles
Early opera was comprised primarily of solos and orchestral interludes. But in the middle of the 18th century, composers and librettists began to recognize and explore the unique and varied dramatic potential of ensembles of voices, resulting in more adventurous character groupings, vocal textures and formal structures.
