Girls In Architecture & Engineering
Girls In Architecture & Engineering -
Mondays, February 25, March 4, & March 11, 4:00-6:00 PM
For Grades 6-8
*Registration opens January 28; limited to 15 girls*
Registration is for all three sessions, and we strongly encourage attendance to all the sessions. Presented by female architects, engineers, and designers working in commercial, retail and residential design, and construction. This is a hands-on/interactive series of workshops that introduce girls to the fields of architecture and engineering and encourage girls to take STEM courses in high school.
Session 1 - Architecture: introduction, plans and elevation of a small house - relative scale, roof slopes, understanding engineering systems enough to work with engineers and how they affect building design.
Session 2 - Engineering: structural, mechanical, electrical, & plumbing - intruduction to all building engineering, wood-framed wall project, tied to elevation in Session 1, examples of MEP components/systems - tie-in STEM with basic structural design considerations/load distribution and MEP system calculations/science.
Session 3 - Options: 3D modeling/sketching/energy modeling programs (different programs, utilize 1-3 designs from Session 1 to show examples), career options, schooling/licensing requirements, tie-in STEM with computer programs and classes offered in high school.
