Akwaaba, Frederick Douglass, and Shields Green: Comrades in the Struggle In-Person

On Wednesday, February 13th from 5:30pm to 6:30pm, local author, poet, and storyteller Robert Djed Snead will give a lecture on the importance of Frederick Douglass, Shields Green, and Akwaaba: The Heritage Associates. Akwaaba was founded in the 1990s to provide historical reenactments and tours of the greater Rochester community's African American history. This talk presents the background and context of the founding of Akwaaba and how Rochesterians Frederick Douglass and Shields Green and freedom fighter John Brown came together in the actions that led to the raid on Harper's Ferry. In addition to extensive historical research on local figure Rev. Jermain Loguen, Mr. Snead is the author of several plays and collections of stories and poems. This program is free and open to the public, no registration required.
