Rochester's Rich History: Freedom, A Shared Sacrifice! New York's African American Civil War Soldiers In-Person

The role of the African American community of Western New York during the Civil War is brought to the forefront in Freedom, A Shared Sacrifice! New York’s African American Civil War Soldiers by Marjory Allen Perez. Join us as the author discusses the issues preventing the enlistment of African American men into the Union Army, the efforts to form black regiments in the North, and the stories of the black soldiers and their families as they became part of the national movement to save the Union and end slavery.

Marjory Allen Perez, former social studies teacher and Wayne County Historian, is an independent researcher and author of four books. Her most recent books focus on the African American community of western and central New York, the Underground Railroad, and the United States Colored Troops of the Civil War.
