Tuesday Topics 2020 -- Children's Literacy
In the news: the National ‘Raising A Reader’ program – serving families with children birth through 8 years old – just marked its 20th anniversary in Nov. 2019. Take Your Child to the Library Day is Sat., Feb. 1; and the week of Feb. 1-7 is Children’s Authors and Illustrator Week.
@ the Library: Tonia Burton initiated the ‘Raising A Reader’ program @ Central, which now serves 480 families. In addition to ‘Raising A Reader,’ the Library is committed to advancing literacy in the City of Rochester through active participation in community literacy initiatives including collaborating with the Rochester City School District on issuing library cards and encouraging library use among all RCSD students. FFRPL has also been a long-standing fiscal sponsor of the Rochester Children’s Book Festival (RCBF). With support from the Library and FFRPL, RCBF’s free 'Festival To Go' program brings the Festival to K-6 students at select Rochester City Schools each year that might not otherwise have access.
Presenter: Tonia Burton, Children's Services Consultant, Monroe County Library System
