Kitchen Scrap Gardening with 4-H Online Online

Don’t waste those kitchen scraps! Learn how to reuse them to grow something new at home. Covers what kinds of plants you can regrow and how to regrow them. Geared for grades 4-7.

To participate in the hands-on activities for the Kitchen Scrap Gardening Workshop, participants would need:

Growing supplies: water, toothpicks, soil, container to hold plant (ex. old Tupperware, yogurt cup, pot)

Kitchen scrap (part of fruit or vegetable that you would not use). When selecting your scrap, you want to try to make sure it still has a “growing tip” on it. This tip could be found in the tops or bottoms of the produce depending on the plant. Example scraps are listed below:

Tops- carrot, pineapple, beet, turnip, radish
Bottoms- celery, head lettuce, leeks, green onions
Whole produce- sweet potato, pumpkin, squash, tomato, melon, pepper, avocado, potato, ginger

Feel free to have any scrap on hand!
