Mourning in the Morning: Mount Hope and the Rural Cemetery Movement: A History of … everything! in 19th century America

Mourning in the Morning: Mount Hope and the Rural Cemetery Movement: A History of … everything! in 19th century America In-Person

REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED (see below). Registrants will receive the Zoom link in an email one hour before the talk begins.

Mount Hope Cemetery is the purist expression of the Rural Cemetery Movement, a reform movement so successful that few people know it ever existed. While intended to appear as a work of nature, Mount Hope is our region’s greatest example of romantic landscape design, its form, function and aesthetic determined by the social, religious, economic and intellectual movements of the 19th century. There are few aspects of American history that can’t be interpreted through Mount Hope Cemetery. It is truly a comprehensive “textbook” of 19th century America.

DENNIS CARR is a founding member, past president and current trustee of the Friends of Mount Hope Cemetery. He is the Senior Tour Guide at Mount Hope, with 2020 marking his 42nd year leading tours of Mount Hope Cemetery. He is currently vice president of the Friends of Mount Hope. Dennis is also on staff at the Edward G. Miner Library at the University of Rochester Medical Center, assisting students, researchers, clinical staff and faculty. He is a life-long scholar of the American cemetery.
