4H: Science of Snow Online
Registration begins January 25.
Join Monroe County 4-H as we explore the wonderful world of snow! Have you ever wondered how snow forms in the sky, or why no two snowflakes are alike? Children will have fun doing hands-on, snow themed science experiments, and learn all about this wonderful winter weather phenomenon. Participants will also create their very own snowman snow gauge to measure the snowfall at home! We promise you will have SNOW much fun!!
Participants will need to prepare the following materials at home:
· 4-6 cups snow (if no snow is available, you can blend crushed ice in a blender)
· spoon
· salt
· 2 glasses or jars (the same size, clear/see-through is best)
· Food coloring
· String
· Wide mouth jar (a large glass will work, too)
· pipe cleaner
· boiling water (adult supervision)
· Borax Laundry Detergent Booster
· wooden pencil or popsicle stick
For the Snowman Snow Gauge:
· paint stirrer stick (short gauge) –or- yard stick (long gauge) **Note, we will be painting this
· Another ruler or yard stick for measuring
· White Paint
· Paintbrush
· Markers (Colored Sharpies will last longest outside)
· 8 inches of ribbon
· 2 googly eyes
· Beads or Buttons (for snowman buttons)
· Black felt or black craft foam for hat
· Glue gun (adult supervision) or craft glue
· Newspaper or other material to protect work surface when painting & glueing
