Decking the Halls to Shopping Malls: American Christmas Traditions and How They Grew

Decking the Halls to Shopping Malls: American Christmas Traditions and How They Grew Online

Join Chris Bensch from the Strong National Museum of Play for this presentation about American Christmas traditions. Although our Christmas traditions have an aura of permanence, many can actually be traced to the second half of the 19th century. This lecture explores the origins and changing styles of such standard holiday features as the Christmas tree, ornaments, stockings, and greeting cards. And the Victorian period established familiar holiday patterns for everything from favorite carols to traffic jams of shoppers.
