Understanding Conspiracy Theory Propaganda and Skepticism (in-person) -
Monday, November 22 from 6:30-7:30 PM
For Adults
*Registration opens Monday, November 8*
Aaron Hyzen, PhD candidate and researcher in the Media, Policy, and Culture research group of the University of Antwerp, will discuss how the early decades of the 21st century will be known as a special time for Conspiracy Theory. Conspiracy theories cast suspicion on the established, mainstream accounts of politics, historical events, scientific explanations, medical practices, and many other topics for which skeptics, or Conspiracy Theorists, concoct their own competing explanations. This talk aims to help clarify the issues surrounding Conspiracy Theory and institutional distrust, discuss the certainty and uncertainty of “science”, and present a philosophical approach to understanding Conspiracy Theories as an ideology.
