Read Books Better: An Introduction to the Slow Book Movement

Read Books Better: An Introduction to the Slow Book Movement In-Person

Did you ever hear of the slow foods movement, where you eat good food and take your time? Let’s create a slow book movement! It’s not that the book is slow; it’s that our reading is more deliberate and more fun. First, learn to read like a detective. Once you recognize certain reading clues, or tropes, you will find you appreciate thoughtful books so much more! You will build your confidence as a reader and experience more enjoyment from a wide variety of books. Bring the award-winning novel Out Stealing Horses by Per Petterson to the first class, along with a small notebook. The story features a man reflecting on his very difficult past, which is slowly revealed to us in a way that is achingly beautiful and ultimately forward-looking. Copies of the book are available for checkout at the Circulation Desk. Jeanne Koré Salvato, is newly returned from teaching writing and literature in Paris. She majored in English at Cornell University and then went on to get her MA in English Lit at UNC Chapel Hill, proof that an English major is not an endangered species. To register, call 784-5300 or Deena.Viviani@libraryweb.org. Sponsored by Friends of BML.
