Putting Faces to Places: The History behind the Rochester Region's Geography In-Person

A map gets you from place to place on your day trip, but it also – looked at in another way – gives hints of the region’s history, including native American settlement patterns and infrastructure, early 19th century land speculation and development, and changing trade routes and economic activities. What’s the story behind such diverse place names as Seneca Castle / Kanadaseaga, Pultneyville, Angelica, Penn Yan, Restof, Clifton Springs, and Batavia? Which areas were settled and prospered in different periods, how can one tell using clues on the landscape, and what historical developments and activities explain these differences? You’ll leave this course equipped to better recognize and appreciate the historical stories that unfold out the window during your next drive through the Rochester region.
