Funky Turns 50: Black Character Revolution Firsts PROGRAM

Funky Turns 50: Black Character Revolution Firsts PROGRAM In-Person

Can you remember watching your favorite cartoon series as a child on Saturday mornings? If so, this program is for you! The Museum Of UnCut Funk brings the Funky Turns 50: Black Character Revolution Firsts panel exhibit featuring a colorful and robust collection of Black cartoon character art images to the Rochester Public Library. During the corresponding program, Co-Founders and Co-Curators of the Museum, Loreen Williamson and Pamela Thomas will discuss how memories of watching Saturday morning cartoons during the 1970’s, has led to the development of the informative and historic traveling exhibit highlighting the first positive Black animation characters in television history. Join us for an in-depth conversation detailing the role Black animated characters, and the Black animators who created them, played in the story of animation. With remarks from Emmy-nominated animation producer, director, and storyboard artist, Dennis Woodyard, this program will also shed light on Rochester’s connection to the world of animated art. Items from this collection are on display in the Funky Turns 50 exhibit in the Local History Exhibits Hall through June 29.

Loreen Williamson and Pamela Thomas are the Co-Founders and Co-Curators of the Museum Of UnCut Funk (museumofuncutfunk.com), a virtual museum that celebrates 1970s Black history and culture. The museum showcases a unique collection of 1970s Black culture artifacts which includes Animation Art and Collectibles, Broadway Window Cards, Coins, Comic Books, Movie Posters, Stamps, etc. Traveling exhibitions that showcase artifacts from the museum collection have been seen by 322,459 people to date in museums and cultural institutions across the country.
